Berkeley Guitar cd (Tompkins Square) 5

Three guitarists who have gravitated to Berkeley, California, with a homage to those innovators of fingerstyle playing, John Fahey and Robbie Basho, neither of whom came from Berkely either. The gathering of the three soloists was captured on half inch tape, no less, in a short space of time and includes set pieces and improvised work. On the whole, they keep to the sunnier side of the street: Adam Snider's The Anger Of God elicits the words brutal and ferocity in the liner notes, but this seems an anger well managed to my ears. Most material is original, but Matt Baldwin opts for a couple of covers - the inevitable Anji which, I'm pleased to say, turns out completely distinctive from any other version I've heard, and Split, Part 2 by the Groundhogs. I was well pleased to find that here. The fine quality package includes a sleevenote by Ed Denson who ran record labels with John Fahey and Stefan Grossman. (JC)

Blue cd (Dreams by Degrees) 1.50

after their excellent series of 'seasons' 10"s comes a series of compilation cds based on colours - artists are invited to interpret a colour musically. Featured: Sir, Lazarus, Rivulets, John Davis, Film School, The Stratford 4, Vela, Park Avenue Music, Colophon and more. Remarkably well-conceived.

Bound With Skin 5cdr (Skulls of Heaven) 15

In 2005 Skulls of Heaven / 23 Productions asked a bunch of artists to contribute some of their most challenging work to a compilation ... this 5 set monster is the result, featuring Tomutonttu, Skaters, Wooden Wand and the Vanishing Voice, Ashtray Navigations, Zodiac Mountain, Brothers of the Occult Sisterhood, Fursaxa & Zaimph, Axolotl, Astral Social Club, Maths Balance Volume, Armpit, Uton, Anla Courtis, Kyrgyz, United Bible Studies and more. Bound with a card obi strip and leather cord.

Breakdancing the Dawn cdr (Rhizome) 5.50

A generous sample of music on cd to be found on a cassette label from Blue Mountains, New South Wales, Australia. Here we find Yr Intestines driving their riff laden angular punk way into the red, followed by Mac Tempel who go for even more overload. It's not all noise, though: xnobbqx go for the sparsest strums and a gently struck cymbal, whilst Stasis Duo supply 4'33" of room atmosphere, the length of which suggests a Cage homage. The Minerals start with cyberman voices before hitting full on overload. These are just a few of the 16 tracks, but I'm getting eye strain trying to make out the liner with this disc so I'll end here, save to say that the closer - by X Wave - is a cover of You Keep Me Hangin' On which sounds like the reincarnation of Sid Vicious and is more fun than the Vanilla Fudge version any day! (JC)

Creeping Dawn vol 3 (students of Decay) 18

Volume 3 in the "Creeping Dawn" series of 3" cdrs, and, as usual, now sold out at source. This one features unsettling synth / electronics haze from Bjerga / Iversen, another gorgeous disc featuring Antony Milton (as Nether Dawn) with the help of Little Skull (Dean Brown) on violin, clarinet, harmonica, tape loops and feedback - heavily fuzzed desolate blues cast in that nocturnal gloom Milton does so well, blasted downer riffs and heavy feedback / fuzz / hiss from CJA and a new cdr from pefkin with 4 new tracks: a melancholic accordian-dense sea shanty, manipulated stringed instruments, lost-in-the-woods-after-dark folk improv and crepuscular melodica / zither drift.

Display Parties cd rom (Aspic) 1

songs and videos from Fingernail, Figurine, Ultra Milkmaids, E*Rock, Schneider TM, Blue Baboon, Kurt Ralske and more

Doing the Right Thing Takes the Emptiness Away cdr (Pjorn) 4.50

Good compilation from Edinburgh's Pjorn label featuring a whole host of electronics wreakers and sound manipulators including Culver, Alistair Crosbie, Wounded Knee, Fordell Research Unit, Opaque and more. Particularly fine: the skin-crawling noise of Kylie Minoise, descending guitar patterns and creaking bowed cello from Culver and the brilliant Wounded Knee with one of his fine looping self-harmonising vocal creations.

Elsie and Jack and Chair cd (Elsie and Jack) 9.50

great comp compiling some of the most fascinating sounds in the world of abstract noise and drone, featuring Fuxa, Crawlunit, Shifts, Tabata, Rapoon, Mhlest, Pregnant Pause, Flutter, Totemplow and Monera

Elsie and Jack and Drake cd (Elsie and Jack) 9.50

exquisitely packaged compilation of Nick Drake interpretations by Electroscope & Zurich, Autumns & Simon Raymonde, Drekka, Warn Defever, Archer Prewitt, Ben Vida, Ray Speedway, Jessica Bailiff (Northern Song Dynasty) & more

The Garden of Forking Paths cd (Important) 7

Superb compilation put together by James Blackshaw with beautiful sleeve design by Nalle's Hanna Tuulikki. It's a winner before you even spin the platter. There are 5 long-form tracks on here by James, Chieko Mori (who contributes two), Helena Espvall (of Espers) and Josef Van Wissem, each one captivating. Highly recommended.

Hearing Music 3" cdr (CLaudia) 3.50

4 tracks based on field recordings which were originally issued on business card cdr. Jane Austen is first up - overheard piano lullabies in the room next door. Next comes C Cottrell with his hyper-real walk in the park - gulls squawk as if they're inside your head and the general rumble washes around everything else like a fast-running river.  Yek-koo's track loops home recordings into what sounds like looped bottle clang. Final track is a cut-up of Tokyo sporting life from Mark Sadgrove.

Inner Ends of the Coils 2cdr (Nothing Out There) 12

A lovely handmade double gatefold package for this compilation of guitar-based sounds: Ashtray Navigations, Sun Stabbed, Century Plants, RST, Michel Henritzi, Jeff Gburek, Savage Sons of Wallonie, Melmac, Gart & Seekatze, Przewalski's Horses, Guanaco, Michael Northern, Expo 70, Nappo, Poldr and Gunn Diehl.

Insight 2cd (Xing-Wu) 2.50

It's Over, We Don't Care cd (Spanish Magic) 1.50

compilation of Australian artists including Hi God People, Pimmon, Brothers of the Occult Sisterhood, Castings, Anthony Guerra and Peter Blamey, Rand and Holland, North Atlantic, Hiss and more

Kanoja, Myos Hanoja cdr (267 Lattajjaa) 4.50

superb compilation on Finland's fine 267 Lattajjaa label featuring tracks from Pefkin, Ben Reynolds & Alex Neilson, Pumice, Rameses III, Zelionople, Sean Og, Felipe & Forte, Grey Park, Vapaa, The Gran Hotel and more. 17 tracks in total.

Electroscope, Adventures In Stereo, One Dove, Mogul, Urusei Yatsura, Rhatigan, Magoo, Policecat and more

Pjorn (072) cdr (Pjorn) 3

rather good comp of ambient noise / electronics: Midwich, Culver, Wounded Knee, Nimrod 33, Tartan Trolley, Legion and more

Procession 3" cdr (CLaudia) 5

instruments as sound-source manipulated through computer, by Tim Coster, Helga Fassonaki, Mark Sadgrove, Adam Willets and Nigel Wright. Particular highlights: Fassonaki's disorientating clanking santur (Persian hammer dulcimer) and Tim Coster's gentle organic drones. Nice packaging too.

Reading Sounds cdr (Luovaja) 2.50

Annoyingly my cd player is refusing to play this but then it won't play my master copies of pefkin stuff, so what does it know?! There are 10 tracks on this, all inspired by classic literature: a number of Finnish bands I'm not familiar with take part, also Robert Horton, Ville Moskiitto and Alligator Crystal Moth. It looks very interesting anyway.

Reynardine cdr (Larkfall) 3.50

14 tracks inspired by Reynard or Reynardine the fox, the sly, and perhaps murderous, figure common in British folklore and song. Contributors include Xenis Emputae Travelling Band, Violence Beyond the Snowline, Anla Courtis, Lanterns, El-G, Far Black Furlong, Day of the Antler (Jani Hellen) and more.

Rewired Burglar Alarms cdr (Gold Soundz) 1

10 track compilation featuring reworkings of source sounds from Sindre Bjerga (who runs the label and is also part of the Bjerga / Iversen duo)'s "New Sounds for Burglar Alarms" cd: there's a great new track from Robert Horton (a vibrant piece of shivering drone wrung from strings, electronics and whistles). Also tracks from A Jarvis / M Jarvis, Iversen, Anders Gjerde, Pal Asle Pettersen, Sten Ove Toft, Crazy River, Stapierfahrer, Qrt and Charles Balls. Comes in a great plastic case with a trigger mechanism to release the cd - hours of fun!

Rewriting the Book double cd (Elsie and Jack) 11.50

Aube’s source sounds for ‘Pages from the Book’ rejiggled and juggled into new sounds and tunes by sirconical, Remote Viewer, Hood, Volcano the Bear, Phosphene, pefkin (both ex-Electroscope), Merzbow, Monera, Steward, drekka, Disco Operating System, Aube, v/vm, Brian Lavelle, Brume and more.

Sing With Me - Music for the Human Voice cdr (Harka-Askel) 3

3rd compilation from Finnish label Harka -Askel, this time concentrating on vocal dominated pieces from the likes of Lampukkello, Robert Horton, Alligator Crystal Moth, Jani Hellen, Kheta Hotem, The Mighty Acts of God, Rokkiryma, Autumn Galaxy, The Reggaee, Xenis Emputae Travelling Band, Ville Moskiitto and more.

Singing At The Moon cd (Singing Knives) 7.50

Great compilation featuring exclusive tracks from Directing Hand, Ben Reynolds, Nalle, James Green, Tirath Singh Nirmala, One Ensemble of Dan iel Padden, Bridget Hayden, Feather Gatherers ( Sharron Kraus ), Michael Flower Band, Chora and more

Spoken & Field cdr (CLaudia) 6.50

34 short tracks of voices feature on this compilation issued on Tim Coster's label: snippets of family recordings, poetry and eavesdropped conversations. Artists feature include Tim Coster, Rosy Parlane, Sam Hamilton, Mark Sadgrove, Adam Willetts, Richard Francis and more

Tomorrow & Tomorrow & Tomorrow Volume 1 cd (Sound & Fury) 6.50

Excellent compilation from Australian label Sound & Fury featuring Gareth Hardwick, Machinefabriek, Part Timer, Pretty Boy Crossover, Morning Stalker, Scissor Lock, Seaworthy, Spartak, Aaron Martin and more.

Wailing Bones Volume 11 cdr (Foxglove) 2.50

The 11th volume starts with more of a plaintive scream than a wail, which soon develops into freeform guitar and drums from Aineettomaksi Temperamentin. Jeff Gburek follows with a lab full of found sound and bell-like electronics, then it's Kheta Hotem, sound like a swampy Arkestra and finally Fathmount, whose guitars live in a lovely big reverb tank. Another strong collection in the series, which will soon be wailin' no more... grab them while you can. (JC)

Wailing Bones Volume 13 cdr (Foxglove) 2.50

Suitably spooky sounds open the 13th instalment of the Wailing Bones series with gloomy piano chords and woeful wails from Denmark's Elektronavn. Next up French duo Ghost Brames with primitive electronics, flute and wordless vocals looped into a tranced throb. Abrasive wails from the underground from New Yorks' Stone Baby. Finally Przewalski's Horse with highly charged thrumming drone and the disjointed clang of found sounds.

Witching Hour cdr (CLaudia) 6.50

subtitled 'Field-recordings of Night-time', this is a peaceful document of night sounds from round the globe (Norway, Pakistan, Finland, Ghana & New Zealand) recorded by Lau Nau, Tim Coster, Richard Francis, Phil Dadson, Felicity Ford, P. Westbourne, Un Ciego and Paintings of Windows. Highlights: Paintings of Windows' (Antony Milton) dense atmospherics, charged drone and distant calls to prayer and a highly evocative piece from Lau Nau featuring rasping wind instrument, finger cymbals, bowed string and metal and a barely audible sung lullaby

Yr Agog cd (Oggum) 5

great compilation from a few years back with proceeds going to Welsh homeless charities: Longstone, Ectogram, Electroscope, Flying Saucer Attack, Magic Carpathians, Stylus, Nimbus 2000, Hydroplane and more

Fanzines

Biggot #1 booklet / Riff Drivel cdr (Silver Ghosts) 1.50

16 page booklet of vibrantly coloured illustrations from Zeloot (who did the art for the Flower Corsano Textile release) & Riff Drivel. The cdr is by Riff Drivel: "raw and minimal sounding 1 finger acoustic guitar pickings and voice loop jam by Riff Drivel" (apologies for not reviewing this but we have no lighting in the Melody Bar room and I'm rushing to get this finished before it gets dark and I start to go completely boggle-eyed)
